This literary film is imbued with the disenchantment of Spanish exiles who left their homes to protest Franco's fascist regime and then returned after its demise to find that democracy had not instilled either ethics or deep motivation in government leaders. Director Basilio Martin Patino presents his story, and a large part of the film is based on his own life, through the experiences of an exiled heroine played by Charo Lopez. She has returned to Spain to look for meaning in her life, something that she never found living in Germany, not even after having a child. She is also in the process of translating the German lyric poet Friederich Holderlin (see the 1985 Halfte Des Lebens) into Spanish, focusing on his epic Hyperion. Excerpts from the translation are voiced over throughout the film. As she looks up old friends from many, many years ago, even those who have achieved worldly success are suffering from the same ennui that propelled her back home.

A Spanish singer, known as "El Ángel", owner of a nightclub, lives a double life as an expert in alarms for gangs of thieves. In his last robbery, he betrays his partners, and his lover is kidnapped and he is blackmailed. Thinking that she has betrayed him, he abandons her to her fate. Finally, she committed suicide. El Ángel reconsiders his life and decides to become a monk. But his former life will meet him within the walls of the monastery.

A couple of friends, "Carmen" (Silvia Solar) and "Miguel"(Germán Cobos), fail to raise the money needed to marry. These difficulties encouraged the illusion of the boy, who wants a shot leaving for another country. The dreams of "Miguel" are approved and encouraged by "Don Pablo", (Pepe Isbert) musician of the Municipal Band and uncle of Carmen, in his years young was unable to reach them. On the other hand, Carmen lives with his aunt "Antonia" (Matilde Muñoz Sanpedro), which does not speak with his brother "Don Pablo", and whose sole ambition is to see married her niece, because in order to "maid" in the family there is enough with her. But with the arrival in Cádiz of the president of a south American country, everything is going to change course.
Aurelio leaves his village and goes to the capital to work with a relative in an emigration shipping company. He soon discovers that his relative earns a bonus extorting migrants who sell tickets. But Aurelio is an honest, sensible man who cannot allow such injustice, and he gets fired. Without telling his parents or girlfriend anything about what happened, he decides to stow away on a boat to America.
Alfonso de Borbón and his cousin María de las Mercedes de Orleans fall in love and, although both families do not maintain good relationships, young people marry when Alfonso became king of Spain.
