It appeared that before the Second World War (in the thirties) in the USSR a secret space program had been developed. The Soviet scientists and military authorities managed to launch the first spacecraft 23 years prior to Jury Gagarin's flight! "The First on the Moon" tells about everyday life, heroic deeds and tragedy of the first group of the Soviet cosmonauts. It is the first Russian film shot in a very rare genre 'mockumentary' or 'documentary fiction'.

Summer, 1944. A military airbase near the very front-line. A young soviet pilot Sergey makes his first practice flight. In the course of this flight he hears a call for help on the radio from Russian pilots, having an unequal air combat with superior forces of the enemy. Sergey rushes to their rescue. His plane gets shut down, and he is taken prisoner. Soon he is taken to a special flight school, where future German aces are prepared and Russian pilots at the wheel of captured Russian aircrafts are used as living targets. Nobody wants to put up with such situation, and they prepare an escape.
After the funeral of a friend, the artist Arkhipov experiences a creative crisis. However, having met a ballerina who was hospitalized due to an injury, he spends many days with her, helps the young woman get back on her feet and forgets about his own misfortune.
Summer 1943. A group of scouts from an artillery division stumbles upon a 12-year-old boy during a raid behind enemy lines. The scouts are shocked by his appearance - completely wild, dirty, ragged, angry and hungry - a real "wolf cub". The scouts take him with them and study that he has been wandering through the forests for about two years, feeding on what infections, and hiding all the time.
Like many boys and girls whose early years included the Great Patriotic War, 16-year-old Dusya was eager to go to the front. She and her family lived not far from Sukhumi, and not a week passed without Dusya stopping by the local military registration and enlistment office. Each time the military commissar refused to grant her request, but Dusya did not give up and one day she was offered to enter an intelligence school.
