Hamburg: Single Martha lovingly looks after the children in her neighborhood, supported by ex-boxer Max. One day, Tommy Skagen, who seems withdrawn, moves into Martha's apartment building with his eight-year-old brother Winnie. Tommy, who studies law during the day, often disappears at night, leaving his brother alone. Illegal mixed martial arts fights take place in the docks below St. Pauli. Here, fighters without boxing gloves or head protection compete against each other for high stakes. Tommy is one of them. He loves fighting and he needs the money. But his double life is increasingly overwhelming him.

Between 1949 and 1975 more than 800 000 German orphans have lived their post-war years in Church Institutions. They have endured terrible abuses. Everyone knew but no one spoke. In 2012 the Church admitted her wrongdoings. The movie tells the story of a German woman (Senta Berger) living in New York coming back to Germany to bear witness in front of a board of enquiry. During her stay she remembers her traumatic experience.
