When David (36) learns that his friend Andreas (40) has taken his own life, the days of their once close friendship are long gone. They hardly knew each other. And yet David can't shake off his feelings of guilt over the suicide of his former best friend.
Clara is studying for a Ph.D in philosophy in Berlin. In this middle-class male academic environment, she feels pushed to one side. She returns to her childhood village in former East Germany for her mother's birthday, and becomes aware that a distance has grown between her and her family.

Full of guilt, denial, manslaughter - and a lack of atonement, which should have been the responsibility of Brandenburg's highest prosecutor. But when the murder happened, when the young hustler Jimmy was found dead in a rotten tree trunk, he was biased. More than that. He was the perpetrator.
Nils Philippi, advertising photographer, accuses himself of being an incorrigible hypocrite. He's been that way since he was a child, said what earned him recognition, what made him look good. He knows his problem, he just can't get rid of it. Nils illustrates his suffering to his analyst, putting himself in the limelight once again.
