Based on a true story from the fateful day of August 29, 1943, when the Germans disarmed the Danish army and navy. The minesweeper MS 1 plays the leading role in the film about the ship that refused to surrender. The commander, Captain U.H. Gad, camouflaged the boat as a tugboat under the name 'Sorte Shara'. With Sweden as its destination, the boat set sail and experienced hours of excitement as it approached the German observation posts.
After a gruesome meeting with the tax authorities Alex Alexander takes a drive in the countryside to calm down. While driving, he accidentally runs into an elephant from a circus. When he is stopped by the police and tells them about the elephant they think he is crazy. He is committed to an asylum by the very authorities his taxes are funding. The doctor tries to convince him that the elephants were not really there, but he gets more help from manic fellow patient Knudsen who makes him realize that everybody in the world is crazy in some way.
Niels Pind is a drunkard who is exploited by some of the town's residents. This comes to an end when his son, Jens, returns from America with a lot of money. Jens buys the local estate and starts extracting gravel from the ground. He quickly gains a bad reputation in the area because he only thinks about money. Niels Pind disowns his son. However, Jens changes as he falls more and more in love with Ingrid.
