Under the notion that "you can not change the future, but the past," a young woman who has grown up in a poor village in the highlands, embarks on a spiritual journey to Mexico City seeking to break the cycle of family alienation and find hope. Carlos has an empty belly and tries to dominate nature by obeying it. The only two pigs in his village are seductive meat. He already has the table set, without knowing that the pig affection will tell him what the pantheons are full of.
In the 1940s, a small Mexican town has seen its last three mayors assassinated in rapid succession. A naive janitor is recruited to become the new mayor, and he believes he will modernize the little town and usher in a reign of peace. But the system corrupts him very quickly, and he takes to abusing his power while associating with an unscrupulous assortment of opportunists, hypocrites and criminals.
The film tells the story of the Boteros, a middle-class Mexican family struggling against poverty after their father's death. Ignacia (Egurrola) is the Boteros mother, a desperate woman who chooses to sacrifice the destiny of her three older children, in order to protect Gabriel (Laguardia) the youngest one. She believes Gabriel will climb the social structure and bring back the lost fortune to the family. But destiny has other plans for the Boteros and tragedy will overcome eventually. Based on the novel of Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz.
