Magistrate Hwang's daughter Jin-yi, is jilted before her wedding because a shoe maker was smitten with her and commits suicide. Jin-yi becomes a courtesan, and becomes famous for her wits and beauty. She falls for Byuk Kye-su, but he's chosen to be an envoy to a far off kingdom. When he leaves she feels so betrayed she takes to a life of wandering. She meets Lee Saeng, a destitute scholar, and stays with him until she discovers he's going to sell her to a group of itinerate clowns. Instead, she joins them willingly.
Min-ae, who sets up a home in a military camp town with Seong-ho, a young man from the neighborhood, thanks to his stepmother's help, has her dream of newlyweds shattered by Seong-ho's abandonment of work and a debauched lifestyle. After seeing her meeting with Jakbu, Min-ae goes to Seoul with her daughter Gyeong-ae, and although they have a hard time, she settles down. Then Seong-ho appeared and apologized for her mistakes and asked for funds for her business. She took out a loan to provide the money, but it was a lie. Now Min-ae becomes a hostess at a salon named Miss Kim. There she meets an architect named Hyun-seok. Min-ae, who found out that Seong-ho took Gyeong-ae away from her but is in her orphanage, brings her back to live with Hyun-seok, but Seong-ho appears and tries to take Gyeong-ae away, but Seong-ho, seeing her happy family, goes back alone.
After their divorce, Emma is unable to get over Hyun Woo, and turns down Jae-ha's marriage proposal. She meets Sanghyun on a boat, where he collects butterflies on an island. She also finds her ex-husband, who wants to get back together, but he lives with Elica so she turns him down. Emma recklessly rides a horse across the fields to dispel her loneliness. She encounters Sanghyun again, who comforts her, but she turns down Sanghyun proposal. Emma reaches the conclusion that marriage and love are two different things, and decides to be independent.

In 1910, Korea suffers the humiliation of being annexed by Japan. Young patriots form an independence group called Bukrogun Jeongseo. General Kim Jwa-jin as well as freedom fighters such as Lee Bum-suk, Na Jung-jo are burning with nationalistic spirit. Japan takes over Manchuria. In order to destroy the freedom fighters, Japan employs the Manchurian bandit, Jang Jak-rim, and starts plotting their destruction. Risking their lives, the freedom fighters engage in a bloody battle at Chungsan-ri under the extraordinary leadership and burning patriotism of General Kim Jwa-jin. Despite being greatly outnumbered, the freedom fighters are triumphant.

With the operation soon at hand, the members of this operation go on a special vacation to Busan. Among them is Il-gyu. He meets with Bae Su-na, a refugee, and they spend a passionate, touching night of love together. The members perform their duties as ordered. Lieutenant Colonel Koh receives a coded message from the headquarters. Koh realizes that his men are a diversion for the Inchon Landing Operation. Lieutenant Koh is angered and resentful. And Lieutenant Sung is chosen to enter the battle instead of Lieutenant Colonel Koh. During the January 4 Retreat, Lieutenant Sung meets Su-na, who has had Il-gyu's son. Lieutenant Sung helps her out.
