A drama set in the summer of 1943 in the Moravian village of Lakotice, where farmer Baran flees from the Gestapo. The village is gripped by fear of the local informer Sekal, who has already denounced two farm owners and received their property in return, while they were sent to concentration camps and killed. Terezka is in love with Antonínek, a shepherd boy. However, her father, an old blacksmith, does not approve of their love, as he would rather see his daughter married to a decent man who could light a fire with his breath and to whom he could pass on his smithy. Poor Antonínek has no choice but to seek help from a dwarf living in the rocks. The dwarf gives him a bellows, and in the end, everything turns out well.
Držgrešle and Drždukát are truly miserly characters. With their cunning, deceit, and eloquence, they could probably swindle a calf from a barren cow. They rob simple villagers and fairy-tale creatures of whatever they can. Just think, they even take away the terrible voice of a terrible robber. In the end, however, they meet their match: the lazy Vojta and his sweetheart Anička come up with a way to rob the greedy brothers of the sack in which they keep all the possessions of those who cross their path.

The entire village and its surroundings are plagued by the greed of the local miller and the castle scribe. The scribe takes a liking to the beautiful Fanka, who works at the mill. But first, he must get rid of Fanka's beloved Kuba. So he decides to send him off to war. And because they want to fill their coffers with gold coins together with the miller, they confiscate Kuba's mother's cottage and fields and drive her out of the village. She curses the miller and the clerk. When Kuba finds out that he has lost everything, he no longer wants to live…
The film about curious children who discover a sunken statue of Masaryk in a disused well was interfered with by the events of November and the filmmakers tried to incorporate their echoes into the flow of the narrative. However, the result is at times confusing, as the originally childish adventure has thus grown into a naive social poster child.
