Kata Juhász is the shrew in this updating of Shakespeare's play. Kata's wedding is scheduled but her groom deserts her over her whims. In order to prevent the guests from being disappointed, she hires a tramp from the banks of the Danube to play the role of the groom. The tramp, Chief Engineer Péter Szabó, doesn't bend to her caprices. This leads to confusion and resolution in the Shakespearian fashion.
Operetta star Gitta Alpar plays a singer engaged for a performance at the Savoy Hotel, where she mistakes Baron von Wollheim for a waiter. But the baron is content to play the game for a while and changes his role with the real waiter. Of course the singer is quite happy when she discovers the real identity of the baron, but now she mistakes him for a thief, as her necklet has gone missing. Further complications arise when the baron's cousin Mary, a composer, arrives at the hotel and wants a music publisher to listen to her songs.
Éva Balogh travels to Pest to attend her friend's wedding, but the wedding is cancelled because the groom backs out at the last minute (for the third time). Éva mistakenly blames Paul Murray, the world-famous pianist, for the broken marriage promise. The pianist, who changes his girlfriends frequently, mistakes the temperamental, snappy jazz girl for one of his forgotten old flames. By the time the truth comes out, Eve and Murray are in love, and another slap - now undoubtedly for Murray - can't keep them apart.
