The pairing met previously in July 2009 at UFC 100 with Henderson taking the victory via second round highlight reel knockout.
UFC Fight Night 84: Silva vs. Bisping was a mixed martial arts event held on 27 February 2016 at The O2 Arena in London, England. Michael Bisping was originally expected to face Gegard Mousasi at this event in a non-headliner middleweight bout. However, Mousasi was replaced by former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in favor of a main event. Three days later, it was announced that Mousasi would face former title challenger Thales Leites.
The event was expected to be headlined by a 145 lbs UFC Featherweight Championship bout between current champion José Aldo and top contender Conor McGregor. Aldo pulled out of the bout and a interim championship bout between Chad Mendes and McGregor took place at this event. The UFC received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not have a broken rib as he claimed and the biggest problem was the weight cutting process being complicated by the injury. This was confirmed when a release of an Xray tied to an old injury was released by Aldo's camp. UFC Fight Night 46: McGregor vs. Brandão was a mixed martial arts event held on July 19, 2014, at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland. The event was expected to be headlined by a featherweight bout between Conor McGregor and Cole Miller. However, Miller was forced to pull out due to an injury, and was replaced by Diego Brandão. Despite the change with one of the headlining participants, ticket demand was high for the event, with nearly all tickets selling out within a few hours of going on sale.

A bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Jimi Manuwa headlined the event. UFC President Dana White initially announced that a bout between Gustafsson and Antônio Rogério Nogueira would be headlining the event. However, just 5 days after the fight was announced news came that Nogueira had to withdraw from the bout due to an injury. Later, reports came that said that Nogueira had never agreed to take the fight against Gustafsson at all.
