Professor Archibald Chagrijn exposes the world to his blubbering gas, which makes people sad and causes them to cry. Bassie proves immune to the blubbering gas -- as he has had an overdose of laughing gas. The professor is hiding on the Canary Islands, but Bassie and Adriaan manage to track him down.
The mayor receives a letter from America, addressed to the village illiterate, in which his brother writes that he wants to be buried in the Netherlands. People believe that the American is rich and want to make plans for the restoration of the café and the rectory, and the construction of a new cemetery. The mayor also wants the nearby gypsies to move to the designated spot, and the teacher's daughter wants more freedom. Because the doctor is the smartest person in the village, he can get everyone to do what he wants.
While the residents of Runichem are busy preparing for the approaching centenary, an art theft takes place in a villa. The same evening, an officer is shot at an alcohol check. When Wilbur tries to call home from the community center that night, the phone interferes and he hears a fragment of a conversation related to criminal activities. Wilbur and his friend Aristides decide to investigate this mysterious case, with the help of Akkie, daughter of inspector Swaan, and grandfather Quarles.
