A melodrama about children living in an orphanage run by a local doctor, Jan Mankiewicz. One day, Jan witnesses a car accident. The victim is a famous actress, Lena Merwińska, who has injured her leg and stays in Zasielsk for a few days. Lena and the doctor fall in love. Lena passes Jan's research paper on to Professor Tomczyński, who paves the way for his great career. Jan moves to Warsaw, where he is to become the head of a children's clinic.

Krajewski, a young bank clerk, is a romantic and dreams of perfect love. One day, he accidentally meets a beautiful girl whom he helps dry her clothes in his apartment after she falls into a puddle while getting off the tram. Enchanted by her beauty and delicacy, he falls madly in love with her, believing that he has found the love of his life. Frania, as the girl is called, disappears every evening, claiming that as a seamstress she has a lot of work and has to work at night as well. In reality, under the assumed name of Irena, she spends her nights as an escort at the Orfeum cabaret. Afraid of losing her beloved, she does not reveal the truth to him. However, the idyll does not last long.

Mania is the illegitimate child of a girl from the suburbs of Krakow and a lawyer. Bowing to the will of the family, he abandons the girl, leaving a large monetary "compensation". The girl dies, but before she dies she leaves a certain Mr. Majcherek a letter and a document, proving that Mania will be able to receive the money when she comes of age. The dishonest Majcherek (knowing the contents of the letter) must therefore wait 20 years to be able to apply for Mania's hand and thus come into possession of her property. Unaware of anything, Mania lives in the suburbs with Maciejowa (who took her in as a child) thinking that she is her daughter. When Majcherek begins to adore Mania it turns out that she already has two rivals - boys from the neighborhood. That's when the fourth one appears - handsome Zygmunt. Mania loses her head for Zygmunt. What she doesn't know is that he is in fact her real father's upbringing....
