Biography of Julian Gayarre (1844-1890), one of the best tenors of all times. At 19, a professor at the Conservatory of Music in Madrid heard him singing for the first time and offered him a scholarship to continue his studies. His artistic life runs between continued success, becoming the world's greatest tenor. But in 1890, while singing at the Teatro Real in Madrid, a failure in his voice is like a cruel reminder of what would happen a few days later: his death at a young age. The doctors gave a diagnosis, but his friends know that Julian Gayarre died because he could not sing anymore.
Dean, a failed American writer, receives some unexpected news: his wife, who belongs to a wealthy family, has filed for divorce. Stunned, he decides to commit suicide. His initial attempt fails when he has second thought. But during a drunken blackout spent gambling he wins big and promises all the winnings to the man who can kill him...but they must possess a special playing card.

A young ex-seminarian named José is doing his military service in Córdoba. There he meets Carmen, a beautiful flamenco dancer who falls madly in love, to the point that he steals to get money for her, so he will be imprisoned. José does not support the separation and, when he is driven by the Civil Guard on a train, he runs off by jumping out the window. He then left for Madrid in search of Carmen, who now lives in the company of his uncle, the lame, master of dancers. The woman welcomes José coldly, although they engage in a strange and tense relationship behind the back of El Morao, her former pimp, who lives with her again.
Girls of a corrupt orphanage are being sold by the sadistic matrons to a badly disfigured doctor. His sinister motive is to use the girls as guinea pigs in his experimental brain surgeries.
Teresa hopes that her social climbing ambitions will be fulfilled by her young son, Jacy. When he learns that his mother has started an affair, Jacy leaves home and embarks on a series of short-term liaisons with several women. He ends up by marrying a retarded but incredibly rich woman.
