The poet and Lillemor have become parents, but poetry and washing the diapers are two subjects which are hard to unite under the same roof. The two just married couples, the barber Anton and Vera plus the baker and Lise, are having some difficulties with their marriages but that doesn't scare off the butcher, who's got the hots for the midwife.

A very respectable married couple, dentist Rudolf Thomsen and Helene, his sweet and quiet wife. He is deeply absorbed in his dental work and expects to be rewarded for his diligence with a prestigious position at a clinic in Amsterdam. After years living in the province, the well-respected lawyer Poul Lindorph returns to the capital. While he is expected to take up the post of Director of Public Prosecutions, his wife Maria is far less enthusiastic about returning to the city. She fears bumping into the editor Asp, with whom she shares a secret: Several years ago, she became Asp’s mistress in order to save Poul and herself from financial ruin. Poul and Alva have been married for a few years when dark clouds begin to gather over their marriage. The dream of having a child doesn’t come true, and the couple drifts further and further apart. Alva escapes into her great passion – music, while Poul becomes embittered by the injustice of fate. When he meets the smiling and cheerful Eva, it doesn’t take him long to forsake Alva and enter into a new marriage. Yet Poul remains unhappy, for Eva is a spendthrift who knows nothing about housekeeping. Alone and abandoned, his thoughts begin to wander back to Alva, the love of his youth. Karin is a model for the painter Otto Werner, with whom she is very much in love. He, however, is merely toying with her emotions. When he becomes reacquainted with a former mistress, he soon forgets all about Karin. By contrast, Otto’s friend, the older millionaire John Fork, sees Karin and falls in love at first sight. Having received news that Otto has gone away with his mistress, Karin agrees to marry John Fork. Baron Dandy has a weakness for young girls. Almost every day he stands in front of the local housekeeping school and waits for the bell to ring so he can admire the flocks of female students. Grete in particular seems to have caught his eye and he follows her every day on the journey home. One day, Grete has enough of her old stalker and her older brother offers to teach Baron Dandy a lesson.
