The original score was in a sorry state: the notes were carelessly marked, the lines were broken, and the paper was covered in smudges. I took the utmost care in reconstructing it: I erased the smudges, traced the lines with a ruler, blackened the bellies of the quarter notes, and added tails to the eighth and sixteenth notes. I believe that today's version of the work will stand up to even the most rigorous standards.
The film reflects on how to live life to the fullest and why the journey of life is not always smooth sailing, but rather accompanied by setbacks, uncertainty, obstacles, and failures, and why it is often painful and difficult. Zborník, Hanka, and Eda, this strange trio, seemingly disparate in age and character, experience a series of vicissitudes and crises over the course of a few days, both comical and quite dramatic, in order to come to the realization, each in their own way, that life is not a walk in the park, nor a well-trodden dry path, but that every act of recklessness, stupidity, irresponsibility, or betrayal must be paid for dearly. An intimate story about a steamroller, but more about a trio of strange people who, thanks to this machine, experience several extraordinary days together.
After her mother's death, twelve-year-old Johana lives only with her father, who is clearly unable to raise her on his own. Therefore, she is sent to spend her holidays with her uncle, who lives alone on a rural farm. Johana, who is attracted to everything mysterious, discovers a mysterious German man living in an old tower in the neighborhood. Together, they search for the secret of a medieval legend about a gateway to other worlds. During their search, not only is their shared "Dänikenian" belief confirmed, but they also learn more about each other.
Cimrman sees the reason for the popularity of the Blanik legend in Bohemia mainly in the geographical location of our homeland. In agreement with Palacký, he was aware that "we are here in Europe like a grain between two millstones. From the west, German imperialism presses upon us, and from the east, the expansionism of the Great Russian colossus crushes us. It is no wonder that a small nation under such pressure seeks supernatural and even miraculous protection, for only a miracle can enable it to survive here."
